That is because the Houston Cougars played tremendous defense, leading the 5 seed to a 72-60 victory over the Wildcats.
There was a little bit of drama near the end as Arizona started pressing Houston and forcing them to turn the ball over. But with the lead cut to 6, Kyler Edwards got the steal from Bennedict Mathurin as he drove to the lane. Then, after Houston took another precious 30 seconds off the clock, Edwards drained a three pointer with a little over a minute left to put the game out of reach.
And with Gonzaga and Arizona both falling, the only remaining #1 seed left in the field is the Kansas Jayhawks – who are probably happy that they are playing on Friday.
This also brings a crashing halt to the Lunatic’s chances – as losing Arizona, Gonzaga and Texas Tech knocked his picks from 6th all the way down to a tie for 74th. Congrats to our current leaders – Edward Zhang in the standard pool and Ann Hawkins in the upset pool.
Also surprisingly, no one got all 4 games right in the Second Chance pool – we all got a second chance for a perfect bracket and the tournament upsets said, I don’t think so…..That leaves us with a 17 way tie for first for those who got 3 of 4 games right.
Things are starting to get wild – 5 of the top 8 teams are now eliminated, with Kansas, Duke and Villanova the only ones still playing. And the Jayhawks still have to beat Providence tomorrow to join the Blue Devils and Wildcats in the Elite 8. It is a great reminder that anything can happen in March.
