The Tar Heels got my message at half time – but the Tar Heels fought all the way back to being down from as many as 24 points to the down just 1 point with a chance to take the lead at the end of the game.
Ven-Allen Lubin took the ball strongly to the hoop and was fouled with 4 seconds. It was a shame the foul was called because one of his teammates had tipped the rebound in. But it would get much worse.
Lubin missed the first free throw but made the second one to seemingly tie the game. Except the referee blew his whistle. Jae’Lyn Withers stepped into the lane early before the free throw was shot for a lane violation. Instead of trying to defend to send the game to overtime, they had to foul to extend the game.
Kon Knueppel made both free throws for Duke, and Lubin’s fade-away three-pointer at the buzzer missed and the Blue Devils hung on to make the ACC championship game. Now, the Tar Heels have to anxiously wait two days to see if they will make the tournament. Tough break for UNC.
Well, my Boilers are down 5 but it is early. Maybe eating some pie will help.
