Happy Pi Day!!!!!

And not just any Pi Day – it is the centennial Pi Day, since it is 3/14/15.   I will add some credit to my friend Mikel Pulins, who reminded me that not only is it the centennial Pi Day, but at 9:26 am (at 53 seconds), we can honor Pi Day to the 10th digit!!!!!!

For those who feel bad of missing this important moment in time, NPR points out that you can do it again this evening at 9:26 pm at 53 seconds).  If you want to be totally nerdy, you can celebrate it for two seconds – the 11th digit is 5 – so you can round up to 54 seconds.  Just think about that while you are enjoying the Big East, MAC, Big Sky, or Southland championships tonight.    (Or whatever more normal thing that you might be doing this evening).

Hope everyone enjoys Pi Day!!!!!   I know that I will have a fantastic one enjoying tons of college basketball!!!!!!   Might even have to see if I can get some actual pie to celebrate.

  1. Not only can one celebrate pi day to the 10th digit at 3/14/15 9:26:53 but, at the right instant, you can celebrate pi day to the millionth digit. Actually, to the infinite digit. But I guess one would need to be quick about it.

Raises the question as to the right time-unit. A more exact match is clearly more enjoyable. (Celebrating pi month (March) feels a bit weak). But there is a point of diminishing returns. Just how much more wonderful is it to be off by 1 part in 10 billion instead of 1 part in a billion? I guess some. But not much.

On the flip side, how much longer do you have to enjoy the moment? 3/14 is only accurate to like 1 part in a thousand. But it lasts for 24 hours. A nice long time.

But, I was thinking of the full infinite expansion of pi as it went zinging by. I don’t think I really got a good glimpse of it.

And, it was pointed out to me, that the real year for pi day was 3/14/1592 I guess, never to come again, so, we’ll celebrate our centennial almost-as-good version.

HELLO TOM!!!! Wonderful to be back in the saddle and ready to exercise my haunches, ignore my hunches, crack the knuckles, and see if I can remember how to start up SAS. (Does everyone know that a pretty nice version of PC SAS is available for free for personal use now? http://www.sas.com/en_us/software/university-edition.html Enjoy.)

Thank you for the data. Thank you for putting on the big show again. I look forward to reading your content-full analyses as I sit back and play numerologist.

    Ahh. Let the games begin.
