Revolt of the Mid Majors

Brackets are being torn up all over the place.   Michigan State, a team picked by many to win the entire tournament, will not make it out of the first round thanks to an incredible effort by Middle Tennessee State.

Normally, it would have been the upset by #13 Hawaii that would have gotten all the news – as they took out California earlier today.   But I think it is only the 8th time that a 15 seed has beaten a #2 seed.   Regardless, there will be plenty of Cinderellas to root for over the weekend.  So far, here are the underdogs (9 seed or higher) that have won – #9 Connecticut, #9 Providence, #9 Butler, #10 Syracuse, #10 VCU, #11 Wichita St, #11 Gonzaga, #12 Little Rock, #12 Yale, #13 Hawaii, and #15 Middle Tennessee St.   That’s right, so far 11 of the 23 games that have been played so far have been won by the underdog!!!!   And at least 6 of those are from the mid-majors (guess it depends on if you would classify the Atlantic 10 or American as a mid-major – which would jump the number to 8).

And because the score doesn’t reflect it, #15 Cal St Bakersfield was only 4 points down with about 3 1/2 minutes to play before Oklahoma finished off the game….

Congratulations to all of our Cinderellas!!!!!
