  • Congratulations to our 4th Round Leaders

    March 27, 2017
What an exciting weekend of basketball.   Gonzaga wins one for the little guy – making it to the Final Four for the first time and becoming the first WCC team to make the Final Four since San Francisco in 1957.    Oregon managed to hold a Kansas team who was scoring an average of 96 points a game in the tournament to 60 and beat the Jayhawks in what basically was a home game for them in Kansas City – the last time the Ducks made it this far was 1939 – the very first NCAA tournament (which they won).   South Carolina came back to beat Florida – giving the Gamecocks their first trip ever to the Final Four (South Carolina now has won only 8 NCAA Tournament games in their history – meaning half of those victories are from this year).  And what an amazing finish to watch Luke Maye hit a shot with just 0.3 seconds remaining to lead North Carolina to an exciting two point victory over Kentucky.
So, lots of fun story lines for the Final Four – can South Carolina keep their winning streak alive?   Can Gonzaga be the mid-major school to win it all?     Will Oregon finally end the longest drought of the major conferences – it has been 20 years since the Pac 12’s last championship (Arizona in 1997)?   Or will it be North Carolina coming back and winning the title that eluded them last year after losing to Villanova on a buzzer beater?      Should be a fun Final Four in Phoenix.
But now to the leaders.   At this very critical time in the pool, our leader is Lauren Martin – she stands a top at 900 pts – having correctly picked three of our Final 4 teams (which is about as perfect as you can get this year in our pool – since it looks like no one picked South Carolina to win the stacked East regional).  Laura Carini, Patricia Kirtz and Mark Schumaker are just 40 pts behind in 2nd place.   Stephanie Palermo and Earl McKnight are tied for 5th just 60 pts behind.   Ashley P, Steve Glass and Kelly Woods are tied for 7th just 70 pts behind.  And Rohit Kapoor wraps up the top 10 – 80 pts behind.
In the Upset Pool, Kyle Kelly predicted Xavier to win the West regional, and that loyalty paid off big time – as having an 11 seed correctly to the Elite 8 has catapulted him to the top of the Upset Pool with 245 pts (those picks are in a tie for 311th in the standard pool).   Mark Schumaker is only 6 pts behind, Ryan Zotti and Greg Williams are tied for 3rd just 10 pts behind, and Gabbi Ams and Earl McKnight are tied for 5th just 12 pts behind.
In our Second Chance Pool, we have a three way tie for the lead between William England, Tony Bisese and Laura Carini – who all are at 440 pts – they are closely followed by a group of 12 at 400 pts – so the Second Chance Pool really could be anyone’s battle at this point.
We also look like we unofficially have our first prize wrapped up – Last place in the Standard Pool.     Ashley P and Hailey are in last place – but they were playing for fun, so are not eligible for the prize.   The next two also don’t qualify as while Michelle Miller and Wendy both have low scores, they don’t meet the Last Place requirements (having picked at least one 4 seed and one 6 seed) – both Michelle and Wendy picked Kansas, but Michelle’s next highest seeded team is #7 St. Mary’s, and Wendy’s next highest seeded team are the #8 seeds Wisconsin and Northwestern.   That gives the person tied with Wendy the next chance.   And Joe Chapman meets both criteria – his score of 380 pts is at the bottom of the standings.   And his picks of Villanova, Louisville, UCLA and West Virginia make his picks eligible for the prize.   And Joe’s picks looked decent after the first round – going 24-8.   But he only got 7 of the second round games right, and that would be the last ones that would be correct for him – being the type of bracket that you can rip to shreds.   The Lunatic is doing so poorly, he doesn’t feel right saying his tagline – so he will modify it.    Joe – you get your entry fee back, you should never have challenged Lauren in the pool.
Speaking of the Lunatic, he is sitting in a tie for 144th place.   He still has one bracket that predicted UNC – so he could theoretically move up some places.    But I don’t believe it is possible for him to be anywhere close to the leaderboard – well done by everyone in a complete stomping of the Lunatic!!!!
  • UNC wins thrilling game to make the Final Four

    March 27, 2017

What an incredible battle to finish off the Elite 8.   The Tar Heels led for most of the game, but Kentucky went on a 17-6 run led by Isaac Humphries, who scored 8 of his 12 points, including a jumper that gave the Wildcats a 5 point lead with just 5 minutes left.   And Elizabeth and I could hear her father screaming all the way from North Carolina, “Call Time Out, Roy!”   And shockingly, a time out was actually called.

But just like in the Arkansas game, UNC went on a 12-0 run, led by Theo Pinson, who scored 6 of his 9 points and pulled down 3 critical defensive rebounds to give the Tar Heels a 71-64 lead with 54 seconds left.   You would figure that this was the end.

But De’Aaron Fox drilled a three pointer from the corner to reduce the lead to 4.   And then, Kentucky’s press forced a five second violation – which led to the Wildcats getting the ball to Malik Monk at the top of the key, where he hit an impressive three pointer to cut the lead to 1.

UNC managed to catch Kentucky over-defending with a baseball pass down the court to Justin Jackson, leading to a breakaway layup to extend the lead to 3.   Then, with 17 seconds left, UNC forced a jump ball to get the chance to ice the game.  UNC inbounded to Justin Jackson, but Jackson missed the front end of the one-and-one – giving Kentucky new life.

The Wildcats took advantage as they got the ball quickly to Malik Monk, who dribbled to the top of the key and hit the game tying three pointer with 10 seconds.   Most teams at this point would call timeout and try to set up a game winning play.   But not the Tar Heels – they inbounded the ball to Theo Pinson, who quickly dribbled up the court, into the lane, got the defense to collapse on him as he drove along the lane, and then kicked the ball out to a wide-open Luke Maye – who hit the jumper to give the Tar Heels a 75-73 victory.

And the Tar Heels survived an amazing comeback from the Kentucky Wildcats, and hit a buzzer-beater to punch their ticket to Phoenix.   The ACC champions North Carolina become the last team in the Final Four!!!!!!

  • Pretty exciting first half

    March 26, 2017

High tempo first half – what everyone would expect from UNC and Kentucky as the Tar Heels lead by 5.

This game has had a different feel than the others because of the history – lets put that into perspective.

This is Gonzaga’s and South Carolina’s first ever Final Four.  And it is Oregon’s second – the last time they were there was 1939 – when the Ducks won the first ever NCAA Tournament.

North Carolina has played in 19 Final Fours – winning 5.   Kentucky has played in 17 Final Fours – and have won 8 (second only behind UCLA’s 11 – who ironically were also in the South Regional Sweet 16)

North Carolina and Kentucky have played in the same Final Four 3 times assuming I counted right (1993, 1997 and 1998).  Ironically they didn’t play each other in those years.  But that still means there has only been 1 Final Four with any of the other three teams, and 3 where these two played at the same time.

If North Carolina wins, they will be playing in back to back Final Fours – so everyone but their 4 freshmen will have made as many or more Final Fours than the other 3 schools have in their history

But that is nothing.  If Kentucky wins, it will be their third in four years – so seniors Derek Willis and Dominique Hawkins will have gone to 2 more Final Fours than South Carolina and Gonzaga and one more than Oregon.

South Carolina is 8-9 in tournament history (with their 4 wins this year).  So Kentucky has won as many National Championships as South Carolina has won tournament games

Oregon is now 23-13 and Gonzaga is 28-19.   UNC is 120-45 and Kentucky is 126-50.   So either the Tar Heels or Wildcats will have won twice as many tournament games as the other three schools combined.

So, in a year where teams are doing things that haven’t been done in history, the South Regional final will ensure that for any of these teams to cap their magical runs with a National Championship, they will have to beat one of the more storied programs in college basketball history.

    Enjoy the second half

  • South Carolina is heading to their first Final Four

    March 26, 2017

Florida started this game hot and took a 40-33 lead into halftime.  But the Gamecocks kept winning the battle inside and quickly chipped away at that lead.

For most of the second half, the teams traded baskets and leads until about 3 minutes in the game.   Then, Sindarius Thornwell took the game over.   Thornwell, who finished with 26 points, got a defensive rebound and drove hard down the court to draw a foul, hit two free throws and give the Gamecocks the lead.  Then, he stole the ball in the corner, drove hard down the court again, but this time stopped in the lane and passed to the trailer Maik Kotsar, who hiy the easier jumper in the lane and the lead was built to 4.

In the Wisconsin game, Florida kept taking it quickly to the basket to close the gap – but this time, the South Carolina defense had the answer, would get the defensive rebound and hit a free throw or two to keep extending the lead.   The game winner was capped as PJ Dozier stole the ball from Friday night’s hero Chris Chiozza and passed the ball up to Duane Notice who threw down an emphatic dunk.

And so the South Carolina Gamecocks will be heading to their first Final Four in school history,  where they will face Gonzaga.   Congratulations to the 7th seed South Carolina!!!

One last spot remains – will today be a true SEC party with their conference champion Kentucky taking the South, or will the ACC champion North Carolina stop the SEC and take the final spot.   Game starts in 15 minutes!!!!

  • The Ducks beat the Jayhawks

    March 26, 2017

This was supposed to be the Kansas Jayhawks party.   Kansas was the #1 seed, and they had averaged 96 points in the first three games of the tournament.  The Ducks had a great run so far, but without starting forward Chris Boucher, it was not viewed that they would be able to hang with the talented stars from Kansas.   And of course, the game was being held in Kansas City – making the Midwest Final a virtual home game for the Jayhawks.

Well, someone forgot to tell the Oregon Ducks – they were working under a different script.   That script had them jump out to a 44-33 lead at half-time, including a banked three pointer by Tyler Dorsey to end the half.   Then, Oregon held off any run that the Jayhawks tried.

Jordan Bell had 11 points, 13 rebounds and 8 blocked shots to control the paint and Tyler Dorsey shot 6-10 from three point range to lead the Ducks with 27 points.  And the Pac 12 regular season co-champions beat the powerful Jayhawks 74-60.

The Oregon Ducks are returning to the Final Four for the first time in 78 years – the Ducks were the 1939 National Champions.   Congratulations to the Oregon Ducks!!!!

  • Zags win the West

    March 26, 2017

Xavier and Gonzaga entered today’s West regional with an interesting record – they were tied for first with the most school victories (27) without making the Final Four.

Nigel Williams-Goss scored 23 points and Johnathan Williams added 19 – as the Gonzaga Bulldogs dominated the 11 seed Xavier Musketeers.

Xavier tried to take the Gonzaga big guys away from them – and Gonzaga made them pay for it by hitting a bunch of threes – thr Musketeers simply did not have an answer.

There is always criticism of a small conference champion when they have such an amazing season – their schedule is too weak, they would not have that record if they played in a major conference like the ACC, Big 12 or Pac 12.   Well, the West Coast Conference champions became the first WCC team to make the Final Four since San Francisco did in 1957.   Congratulations to Gonzaga for becoming the first team to book their ticket to Arizona and the Final Four!!

  • Expert advise on the Elite 8

    March 25, 2017

That’s right – it is time to bring to you expert advice on the Elite 8 in the way that only the Lunatic can – by polling the amazing basketball knowledge of the Lunatic Expert Panel.

West Region – #1 Gonzaga vs #11 Xavier

    • Crazed Lunatic – Gonzaga – this is normally the time of year that the regular season and tournament champions keep winning games – not to mention that Gonzaga has only lost one game all season
    • Mrs. Lunatic – Gonzaga – I always have like this team when they were consistently a favorite to be Cinderella – they are now the big dog – Go Zags!
    • Charlie – Xavier – I might be able to get in the top 10 and win money if Xavier wins – have to pick Xavier
    • Katie – Gonzaga – would it irritate Charlie if Gonzaga won – I will pick them.   Plus, their mascot is a Bulldog – I would like a dog!

Midwest Region – #1 Kansas vs #3 Oregon

    • Crazed Lunatic – Kansas – did you see how badly the Jayhawks beat up my Boilers!    I am not sure anyone can beat them.
    • Mrs. Lunatic – Oregon – I don’t know that they will beat the Jayhawks, but I would rather root for the Ducks!  Quack!  Quack!!!
    • Charlie – Oregon – I think it is in my best monetary interest if Kansas doesn’t win since lots of people picked Kansas.  Quack!   Quack!
    • Katie – Oregon – I like ducks – they are cute!    Can we get a cat?   How about any pet?   We keep talk about animals – lets get a pet!

East Region – #4 Florida vs #7 South Carolina

    • Crazed Lunatic – Florida – I think this is going to be a great game – these two teams split in the regular season, but I think Florida has been slightly better, so I will take the Gators.
    • Mrs. Lunatic – South Carolina – my rule still stands – never pick a school from Florida.   Plus, I don’t like Gators – *** shudder ***
    • Charlie – South Carolina – they are a 7 seed, most likely no one has the 7 seed – more chances for me to win if South Carolina does
    • Katie – South Carolina – we go to South Carolina every summer with Nanny and Grandpa!!!   I like them – Nanny and Grandpa that is.

South Region – #1 North Carolina vs #2 Kentucky

    • Crazed Lunatic – Kentucky – I am not allowed to root for North Carolina – my father-in-law has forbid it.   Plus, they are the only team left alive in my bracket, so you know that has to favor Kentucky.
    • Mrs. Lunatic – North Carolina – a girl has to respect their Carolina roots
    • Charlie – North Carolina – all the other three games don’t matter if UNC doesn’t win.   So, obviously this has to happen
    • Katie – North Carolina – Do you want to hear me sing the fight song – Grandpa taught it to me – I’m a Tar Heel Born!  I’m a Tar Heel Bred!  And when I die, I’ll be Tar Heel Dead!   Then there’s some Rah Rah stuff!

Katie is now asking me that since we have done this, does that mean we no longer have to watch the basketball games.   Charlie is asking why the games have to be so late – he can’t watch them if it is after bedtime.    Elizabeth is happy because there is only four more nights of basketball games blocking her from watching her favorite true crime shows like Dateline and 48 Hours Mystery.   And I am making sure that I have options to watch the games online when I lose the TV.   Just a couple hours until the Elite 8!!!!!

  • Congratulations to our 3rd Round Leaders

    March 25, 2017

Our new leader in the pool is Justin Peabody – at 710 points, he has a 10 point lead over Justin Peabody, Patricia Kirtz, Brad Harding and Mark Schumaker.  Bill Kahn and Cinde Johnson are in a tie for 5th – just 20 pts behind and Stephanie Palermo, Chris Kelly, Drew Bradley and Earl McKnight are tied for 7th with 680 pts.

Sadly, if someone just picked the team highest in the AP Poll, they would be tied with Justin for the lead – but fortunately, it looks like that type of laziness would have not been rewarded in the end as they would have picked Villanova to win it all.

In the Upset Pool, it is Kyle Kelly leading with 245 points thanks to his brave pick of Xavier to win the West Regional.  Ryan Zotti is second with 235 points – followed by Greg Williams at 231, Gabbi Ams at 229 and Earl McKnight at 225.  Pretty impressive – Greg and Gabbi also got Xavier right – their boldness of taking the 11 seed to the Final Four has placed them in contention for the Upset Pool.

In the second chance pool, Tony Bisese is the leader – getting 7 of 8 correct, as Florida’s last second shot stopped him from going perfect in the Sweet 16.  Then, there is 21 people tied for 240 pts.   So the Second Chance Pool is totally up for grabs.

The Lunatic is likely already done – in a tie for 128th place, he can only move up if UNC keeps winning – and there are likely too many people in the way to get too close to the leaders (but will have a clearer picture of the standings by the end of the weekend).   That being said, the Lunatic’s 10 year old son Charlie is doing well – as he is tied for 19th.

Good luck to everyone over the weekend, whether your school is still in the games or you simply want to enjoy some great basketball.  The Elite 8 is here – and we have four great regional finals ahead!

  • Florida wins at the buzzer

    March 25, 2017

What a way to end the Sweet 16.   In overtime, it was Wisconsin that took the lead.   But Canyon Barry came in off the bench to give the Gators a spark.   Barry hit a nice drive to the basket to start the comeback, two big FTs to cut the lead to 2, and a huge block on Iverson – which led to Chris Chiozza driving to the basket to tie the game.

Nigel Hayes made a nice drive to the basket which almost went in – but he got fouled.   The senior who had struggled from the line in the overtime period hit both free throws to give Wisconsin a 2 point lead.

That set the stage for Chiozza who got the inbounds, drove up the court as fast as possible and hit an impressive three pointer at the buzzer to give the Gators an 84-83 victory.

With Kentucky winning against UCLA and South Carolina’s big upset of Baylor in the last two games, the SEC showed their dominance of the night by sending all 3 of their teams to the Elite 8.   Pretty impressive showing by the SEC, and amazing way to end the Sweet 16.

  • Overtime!!!!!!!

    March 25, 2017

Lets play 5 more minutes!!!   The Wisconsin Badgers scored the last 8 points of the half, including a miraculous three pointer with 2.5 seconds left by Zak Schowalter to tie the game at 72.   Why not – this has been a great Sweet 16 – why stop now….
