  • Lets get Super Saturday started!!!!

The Wichita State / Miami FL game has just tipped off in a day that totally doesn’t resemble a typical Round of 32 Saturday – but should be some fantastic basketball.

Here is our fantastic set of games today. (with both seeds and coaches poll ranking)

    12:15 pm – #3 Miami FL (11) vs #11 Wichita St (29)

    2:40 pm – #4 Duke (20)  vs #12 Yale (T37)

    5:15 pm – #4 Kentucky (13) vs #5 Indiana (12)

    6:10 pm – #4 Iowa St (19) vs #12 Little Rock (T39)

    7:10 pm – #1 Virginia (5) vs #9 Butler (T37)

    7:45 pm – #1 Kansas (1) vs #9 Connecticut (27)

    8:40 pm – #3 Utah (14) vs #11 Gonzaga (T30)

    9:40 pm – #1 North Carolina (3) vs #9 Providence (28)

At first glance, it isn’t that far out of whack.   You could make an argument that while Little Rock and Yale are mis-seeded by coaches ranking, we all know that small conference champions tend to get 12 seeds (and that is why they are so dangerous).

Two glaring teams that are mis-seeded are Wichita St and Gonzaga – but if their poll rankings made them 7/8 seeds, it probably is a break for a 3 seed to play them.  But here is a great piece of information.  Vegas has listed Wichita St as a favorite and Gonzaga / Utah as a pick-em game.  I don’t think I have seen a double digit seed listed as a Vegas favorite/even match against a protected (top 4) seed – definitely don’t think I have seen two on the same day.  And I don’t think that this is saying anything about Miami / Utah – it is more about the talent of Wichita St and Gonzaga.   (Editor note: of course, as I write my rant below, Miami has jumped out to a 19 point lead – go figure what happens in March).

But the match up that really still has me riled up is Kentucky vs Indiana.  If you believe the AP poll, both these teams should be 3 seeds.  Coaches poll has 3 seed vs 4 seed.  Either way, there is not any good reason that the SEC and Big 10 champions should be playing this early in the tournament – and quite honestly, it feels wrong that the reward for winning this game would be to have to play the ACC champion and second ranked team in the tournament (assuming North Carolina handles their business against Providence).

I would like to believe that it is just an accident, but I am starting to have a conspiracy theory here.   If you look at the last 2 Final Fours, 6 of the 8 schools came from the Big 10 (Wisconsin in 2014 and 2015, Michigan St in 2015) and the SEC (Kentucky in 2014 and 2015 and Florida in 2014).  And last year’s champion was from the ACC (Duke).  It almost looks like the committee is making sure this doesn’t happen again by putting their champions all in the same region and make them knock each other out so only one of them can get to the Final Four.

I like to believe it is just dumb luck – but I do think it is an interesting coincidence that Kentucky has made it to the Final Four the last two years, was co-champs in the regular season, won their conference tournament – and their reward is to have to play the regular season champ of the other conference that has sent the most recent teams to the Final Four and potentially the #2 team in the tournament just to get to the Elite 8.   I don’t even like Kentucky – and I still question how fair this is.

  • Congratulations to John Bachmann

The Lunatic has had crazy mixed feelings about the first round.  On one hand, he has watched his Boilers go down (which was his Final Four team in the Midwest for his insane picks) followed by the Michigan St Spartans lose to Middle Tennessee St (which was his Champion for his sane picks).  And yet, the Lunatic went 28-4 and 27-5 with his picks, which is a ridiculous event of success for the crazy sleep deprived lunatic.  Still trying to figure out the odds that I would have only missed 4 games in the first round, and have those 4 teams include a Final Four team and two Elite 8 teams.

That means that the Lunatic is continuing his reign of terror from last year where only Troy Cole could stop the crazy one.  Technically, no one is stomping the Lunatic!  However, one person, John Bachmann is tied for the lead at 280 in the Standard Pool, and because of picking a slightly riskier upset, John is also leading our Upset Pool.  More importantly, John picked Virginia, Oregon, Kansas and North Carolina for his Final Four – and so unlike the Lunatic’s insane picks, John’s top teams all won their games in the first round.

Of course, as it always is, there are plenty who are close.  Doug Crowe, Roy Welcher, and Red Shepley finished with 270 points.   And 9 others scored 260 points.   That combined with the Lunatic’s misplaced loyalty to Purdue, and there should be plenty of opportunities for more people to put the Lunatic in his proper place.

But the true winner of this March is Cinderella.  10 double digit seeds (which I believe is a tournament record) won in the first round, and that doesn’t include the 3 nine seeds that also pulled off upsets.  And how can you not be enjoying March after watching 11 seed Northern Iowa win off a half court buzzer beater!

Good luck to everyone in the Second Round – it will be interesting to see if the craziness continues.

  • Are you kidding me!!!!!

If you didn’t stay up to watch the late games, you missed an incredible ending to the first round.

First, Texas finds themselves down 2 points to Northern Iowa with 11 seconds in the game.  Isaiah Taylor gets the ball and drives down the court, hitting a great shot to tie the game with just 2 seconds left.  And then, March Madness happens.  The Panthers pass the ball in to Paul Jesperson, he gets to half court and heaves the ball towards the basket, and the arena erupts as the ball hits the glass and bounces in to give Northern Iowa an improbable way to win by 3 points over Texas.

Then, if you switched over quickly enough, you witnessed the following chain of events.  Cincinnati’s Jacob Evans gets a dunk to give the Bearcats a 1 point lead with 16 seconds left.  St. Joseph’s brings the ball down the court, and Isaiah Miles calmly knocks own a three point shot to get the lead back by 2 points with 7 seconds to play.   So, Cincinnati drives down the field, gets stuck at the baseline until a brilliant pass to big man Octavius Ellis who goes up to dunk the ball to what looks like it ties the game.  But upon review, the refs can see that the ball which is even partially in the cylinder is still touching Ellis’ hand as the red light goes off representing the end of the game.  The dunk is waved off and St. Joseph’s survives with a 2 point victory.

    WOW!!!!   IT MUST BE MARCH!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Cinderella keeps coming

Lets not leave the 14 seeds out of the Madness – Stephen F Austin just completely destroyed West Virginia 70-56 as Thomas Walkup scores 33 points and adds another mid-major champion to join the party over the weekend.

I do feel a little bad for West Virginia.  This senior class from the Lumberjacks have had a pretty incredible four years.   Tonight’s victory gives them their 116th victory over the last 4 years while they have only lost 18 times – it is also their 2nd NCAA Tournament victory as they pulled an upset in the 2014 Tournament.    I am not sure why a team that went 27-5, who is returning a senior class that has won 27 or more games each of their 4 seasons, and who also has won a tournament game is showing up as a 14 seed.

And I will continue to moan about this because the seeding this year was horrible.  But if you are a top 12 team, you have to win this game – even if it is unfair.

So, congratulations to the Lumberjacks!!!!   Enjoy your 2nd NCAA visit to the Round of 32!

  • Revolt of the Mid Majors

Brackets are being torn up all over the place.   Michigan State, a team picked by many to win the entire tournament, will not make it out of the first round thanks to an incredible effort by Middle Tennessee State.

Normally, it would have been the upset by #13 Hawaii that would have gotten all the news – as they took out California earlier today.   But I think it is only the 8th time that a 15 seed has beaten a #2 seed.   Regardless, there will be plenty of Cinderellas to root for over the weekend.  So far, here are the underdogs (9 seed or higher) that have won – #9 Connecticut, #9 Providence, #9 Butler, #10 Syracuse, #10 VCU, #11 Wichita St, #11 Gonzaga, #12 Little Rock, #12 Yale, #13 Hawaii, and #15 Middle Tennessee St.   That’s right, so far 11 of the 23 games that have been played so far have been won by the underdog!!!!   And at least 6 of those are from the mid-majors (guess it depends on if you would classify the Atlantic 10 or American as a mid-major – which would jump the number to 8).

And because the score doesn’t reflect it, #15 Cal St Bakersfield was only 4 points down with about 3 1/2 minutes to play before Oklahoma finished off the game….

Congratulations to all of our Cinderellas!!!!!

  • Congratulations to Red!

After the late night games, we had more double digit teams win – as Gonzaga and Wichita State continue to dominant trend of the mid-majors.

But the real dominating performance is from our first round leader – Red Shepley.  Red was able to go a perfect 16 for 16.  There were 9 more people who managed to get 15 of 16 – including the Crazed Lunatic’s insane picks (which continues to rub the salt in the wound that the only loss was Purdue – which the insane picks had going to the Final Four so I could root for my team).

Congratulations to Red for such a great job of picking Thursday’s games!!!!

  • Good luck to everyone!!!!

We have 353 entries, with four additional entries that I have to figure out how to load into the database (they sent me their picks by email because they were having problems with the site).    And thanks to both 12 seeds winning this afternoon, we have only 7 (+/- 4 since I haven’t added them in yet) who still have a chance at a perfect bracket.

Great job to Chad Wright, Shaun Dessuit, Taylor Early, Gabby Ams, Doug Crowe, Red Shepley, and John Howarth.

The Lunatic’s insane picks went 7 for 8 – I would gladly trade them all in so that the one loss was turned into a win.

  • Heartbroken by Cinderella

Purdue had a 13 point lead and then Matt Painter and the Boilers took their foot off the gas.  And Arkansas-Little Rock thanked them by sending the Boilers home in the first round for the second straight year.

Amazing double overtime victory for Arkansas-Little Rock.  Typically, the Lunatic would be going crazy about how awesome this is – but I can’t help but feel bad for my Boilers.  Will be a sad rest of the evening for the Lunatic.

  • Our first Cinderella has a name

That name is Yale – as the Bulldogs have just beat #5 Baylor 79-75 to earn the school’s very first NCAA Tournament victory!!!!!   You also have to feel a little bad for Baylor – this is the second year in a row that the Bears have been beaten by a double digit seed in the first round.

    Congratulations to Yale!!!!!!

  • Lunatic reveals his picks

As always, I did some quick mathematics to try to predict the games.   And then, when I didn’t believe some of the results, I went with my gut.

Part of it was because what I noticed happening.  I was picking all the Big 12 schools.  And to be honest, the Big 12 schools look really good.  But the Big 12 has a history of blowing up people’s brackets.  The last time a Big 12 team went to the final four was when Kansas got to the final in 2011.   So, I quickly detoured from my model.   Maybe this will be the year the Big 12 breaks out – but I don’t want to bet the farm on it.

In my sane picks, despite my history lesson, I don’t see anyone beating Kansas in the South.   I have Miami Florida making a run and taking out Villanova – but the Jayhawks are going to finally end the drought.   In the West, I had Duke upsetting Oregon and Oklahoma to get to the Final Four.   In the East, I think the preseason #1 North Carolina Tar Heels will beat West Virginia.   And in the Midwest, Michigan State gets to eliminate Virginia for a third straight year.   This leads to Michigan State beating Kansas in the championship.

In my insane picks, I still have Kansas beating Miami.   I still have Duke upsetting the Ducks and reaching the Final Four – but this time, Texas A&M beats West Virginia to get to the Elite 8.   In the East, I still see the Tar Heels beating West Virginia – especially after Wisconsin upsets Xavier to get to the Sweet 16.  And then I go crazy.  In the Midwest, I have to cheer on my Boilermakers.   I am going to have their front-court go on a surprising run that finishes off Virginia and then gets revenge on the Spartans to take the West.    At this point, my Boilers lose to North Carolina, while Kansas still takes out Duke – which will lead to North Carolina claiming the National Championship.

So, there you go – now you know that Michigan State, North Carolina, Purdue, West Virginia, Duke, Kansas, Miami FL, Texas A&M and Oklahoma are all doomed with the Lunatic cheering them on.   As I write this post, we already have 237 entries and still likely have our mad rush of entries that come in at the last minute on Thursday – don’t miss out on your chance to STOMP THE LUNATIC!!!!!
